Ladies Night! Celebrating Sound Systems (Friday 3rd December 2021)

Memories come flooding back as community members look at an old photo album

At Ladies Night! (MAPA Cultural Arts Centre Bradford), we shared some wonderful memories of dancing, talking, going out, dressing up, helping out – being there as our young selves back in those days:

What an excellent evening! I thought it went really well even though the turnout was disappointing. I think we captured some important perspectives – and drew attention to them. We can talk about ways to take ideas further but meanwhile many thanks for those involved for making it go so well and for being so supportive.

It was a great night, and we can definitely build and develop this idea further. The conversations were so good for drawing out memories and more ideas.”

What a night and what a lovely atmosphere! This became a night when memories were shared and made. Thanks to MAPA, our sponsors, volunteers, DJ and catering team, and to all those that came along. The pictures say it all! Thanks to John Hodgson for his support of Rites of Passage and the city’s vibrant music scene over the years.

The serious point about Ladies Night! is this: without the fans and followers, these sound system posses wouldn’t have had the invitations and built the reputations they did!

Women of all ages were vital parts of the sound system stories and Rites of Passage welcomes all those willing to share their own stories – as mothers, aunties sisters, partners (ex-partners too!), friends and daughters.

We know that without women’s support, some of the crews wouldn’t have become such legendary names. This was a night to honour all of those who helped to cook, store, finance, listen and dance, to select and in other ways support the posses that have become part of Bradford’s sound system stories.

We pay tribute to to the women who have become legends in their own right within sound systems.
